Corner of a street

Painting of a street corner looking across the road to the shop, cars and buildings beyond

2021
Aerosol and hand-cut vinyl on aluminium composite
61 x 40cm

This piece brings me one step closer to the concepts I was trying to grasp and convey nearly 20 years ago. It highlights the myriad of communication even on a simple street corner – road signs, shop signs, a circuit box, billboard and even the fire hydrant communication are placed into sharp focus.

I’m also developing a language of texture that helps to push the communication even further into view. The textured patterns are based on a multiple of senses and thoughts – like how does it feel, is it hot or cold, is there movement in the texture, or simply, what do I see. The cream-coloured wall conjured words like “smooth, rough, rock, cold, sandy and dry”. The road was “rough, dry, sharp, speckled and pain”, and the awning was “smooth and hot”. I’m actually developing a nice pile of patterns to draw inspiration from to ‘mix and match’ surface concepts.

For a long time, I’ve been very much inspired by Japanese woodcuts and paintings, they are so graphic in colour, pattern and composition; I am constantly referring to them. I think it really shows in this piece.
