Celebration!

This on-going series of paintings started from a simple premise – people from all over the world have come to Australia and brought with them food and ingredients that have forever changed and added to the fabric of Australian life; and I want to celebrate them.

Celebration – Thailand

The Beginning

It all started with a small bottle of pandan essence bought in Abbotsford, Victoria, Australia and imported from Thailand that I enlarged to gigantic proportions; the bottle was actually quite tiny. I added a Thai pattern in the background that might decorate an Australian home. I also included a portion of the import label that shows the product was made in Thailand and imported into Australia. The final flourish was a ribbon with the word ‘celebration’ in Thai and the word “Thai” in wingding’s font.

The series continued over the years to include America, New Zealand, Spain, Britian, China and Italy. Each time including the various elements to show the wonderful variety of food, fonts, design and patterns that each country brings to Australia.

Evolution

I came to realise that these ingredients are used to make dishes from different countries, that people in Australia may take for granted. So, for my next piece “Celebration – Greece” I included the usual structure but also added the names – in Greek – of dishes and foods we eat that were created in Greece. It was an absolute joy to create. I imagined graffiti style – stickers, spray paint, handwriting, whatever came to mind and covered it in these words and stickers.

This new evolution continued to ‘Celebration – Greece 2’ (a commission), ‘Celebration – South Korea’, ‘Celebration – India’ and with my latest piece ‘Celebration – Greece 3’ (a commission).

And so, my series continues with many more celebrations to come 🥳
