This is a door in Abbotsford, Victoria it’s as the title suggests down a street, down a lane, but what astounds me every time I see these sort of doors is the number of people that have found it and have added their graffiti and tag. As always I try to replicate them as exactly as I can, because they have as much importance in my mind as a logo or sign. They are as much a part of our visual landscape as any other paid signage.
As well as the visual I’ve tried to include some of the audible sounds in the environment, much like Whiteley’s “Kookaburra” 1983, screenprint with offset lithography – the mumble behind the door of the factory, the screech of a distant shopping cart and the person enquiring about what you’re doing? I’ve also tried to convey the feel of the concrete within the doorway with it’s rough scratchy swirling texture.
The mortar and door frame are painted in metallic gold to elevate this hidden place from its humble position in the world.
