I’ve had this eloquent sentence burned into my brain and immediately wrote it down since it happened about 6 years ago, and I’ve been dying to paint it.
The story goes that on a peaceful work day in my ‘Home-Office’ overlooking a T-intersection, the silence was suddenly broken by a distant angry voice that seemed to come from the top of the street; and was quickly getting closer, louder and was clearly very angry. I was instantly distracted from my work and wanted to see what was going on. I couldn’t really make out any of the words initially but it was very loud and quite furious, when all of sudden a guy on a bike sped around the corner without stopping and shouted these immortal words for all who were in earshot.
I must admit it made me laugh, it was just so Australian and so without a care for whoever heard him – he didn’t give a shit. The other person/people on the other end of the call were in trouble; how much trouble I have no idea.
Since creating this piece, it has made me really reflect on how we conduct and censor ourselves as a society. We control our environments in workplaces, shopping environments, anywhere that is fundamentally private property or property that is owned but we can’t control people out in public spaces. Our senses are always prone to hear and see things that are out of our control. For all the censorship that we try to control there will always be an element that will always be out of our control, whether we like it or not.
