Old signage letters, paint and vinyl
50.5h x 42w x 23d cm
After a year of painting I wanted to get back into making a sculpture. I have multiple boxes of disused signage made from acrylic, metal and in this case I think its a composite wood material that I got from my friend Damian many years ago. These letters had been hanging on our outside back wall in our old house but were now sitting in a box.
My initial thought was it has to be a ball of letters; I don’t want the viewer to immediately recognise any individual letter form. So I painted them all matte black so that they merge into one shape. Then I imagined that because of the blackness the letters formed the night sky so instead of dots for stars why not letters?! Then that old saying came to mind “It’s written in the stars”, so instead of dots its the word ‘IT’S’.
For those people fussy about punctuation I’ve added one apostrophe at the top of the large letter C on the top right and behind it it’s covered in apostrophes.
I had thought about making it all black but that’s way to sombre and serious for me, it had to have stars.
