Painting of a corner in Docklands, Victoria highlighting all the tram tracks, tram lines, signage and traffic lights with a lone figure walking across the road

This is an interesting piece because it’s not quite the image I thought I was going to create.

I travel on the tram around this corner quite a lot and I was struck by the amount of traffic lights and signs there were; so my intention was to have the blurred foliage, road and footpaths; then add the man-made elements in contrasting detail; then add outlines of trams, people and cars at various stages of movement across the scene. But as I worked on the piece I realised it didn’t need all of that. I liked how the tram wires fill the sky and the tram tracks fill the ground, then in between we have a sea of signs, poles, communication boxes, electricity boxes, traffic lights, rubbish bins, painted lines, lights, branding and boundary fences; plus one lone figure crossing the road literally surrounded by man-made objects.
