I saw this place when we were on one of our many Covid lock-downs in Melbourne and it struck me how beautiful the foliage was, but the element that most stood out was the yellow ‘LOW CLEARANCE 4.2m’ sign. My memory of the location made me realise it was a tale of 2 halves – one of lush plants, trees and growth; while the other was tar, concrete, noise and grey.
Over time we as humans naturally take over the landscape and make it our own, we not only takeover physically but we take over audibly; our sounds muffle the sounds of nature.
This image is a composite of my memory of the location. The road meandering into the distance is inspired by Brett Whiteley paintings of outback country roads and Lloyd Rees painting “Looking directly at the sun”.
