Aerosol and hand-cut vinyl on aluminium composite
30.5 x 20cm
After an extended time away from using the spray cans and vinyl I finally got to start creating my art again.
I applied for an art space at Blender Studios, just up the road from our apartment and I was accepted! I had thought that in order to rent a space I just needed to ask but it turned out that I needed to submit a selection of work and show my social media pages. I’m thrilled to now be working there amongst the other 22 artists.
I’d been away from my medium for so long I thought it best to create 3 small pieces that would utilize the usual techniques (which I was a bit rusty using) while introducing 3 new elements I hadn’t tried before – one element into each piece; using the central still life of an iconic vegemite jar.
The second piece ‘YUM #2’ again used initial freeform spraying but this time on the raw black aluminium with a smaller full-sized jar. I then only picked out small details of the jar to help define it. The full definition of the shape would come from the large mass of words around it. Each word relates to vegemite in some way – taste, appearance, smell or it’s uses. I then created a separate page of the words and turned it into one stencil filled with 3 vignetted colours. The ‘ooooohhhh’ refers to a piece from Whiteley that has a screaming kookaburra in which there are words and graphic elements to convey the sound the bird makes.
