After an extended time away from using the spray cans and vinyl I finally got to start creating my art again.

I applied for an art space at Blender Studios, just up the road from our apartment and I was accepted! I had thought that in order to rent a space I just needed to ask but it turned out that I needed to submit a selection of work and show my social media pages. I’m thrilled to now be working there amongst the other 22 artists.

I’d been away from my medium for so long I thought it best to create 3 small pieces that would utilise the usual techniques (which I was a bit rusty using) while introducing 3 new elements I hadn’t tried before – one element into each piece; using the central still life of an iconic vegemite jar.

The third piece ‘YUM #3’ is a bit of silliness but an attempt to step away from using photo references and use my own illustration. I needed to fully understand the process I had developed and use my own drawings. I also wanted to try having multiple stencils layered over each other to see what would happen. So, I used the word ‘umami’ in gradually enlarging fonts and colour strengths over each other. The Cheshire cat smile was another experiment using a can of semi-transparent white.
